Health infrastructure in Samburu County remains limited relative to population needs. The county operates a small number of health facilities including Samburu County Referral Hospital and scattered health centres and dispensaries in sub-counties.

Distance to health services poses challenges for rural residents. Many people travel long distances to reach the nearest health facility, which may lack medicines, equipment, or trained staff. This geographic barrier contributes to high maternal and child mortality in remote areas.

Staffing constraints affect service quality substantially. Health professionals prefer urban postings or regions with better amenities. Samburu's remoteness and limited housing and services complicate recruitment and retention of doctors, nurses, and specialists. Staff turnover remains high.

Disease burden reflects pastoral region characteristics and limited preventive services. Waterborne diseases remain common where water access and sanitation infrastructure are inadequate. Malnutrition affects pastoral populations particularly during droughts. Livestock diseases transmissible to humans concern herders and pastoralists.

The county health system depends substantially on funding from national government and donor organisations. County government health budgets remain limited, constraining facility maintenance and service expansion. Donor funding fluctuates, creating sustainability challenges.

Community health workers, trained volunteers providing basic health education and primary care, extend services into pastoral areas. These workers depend on unpaid or minimally compensated labour, affecting motivation and availability.

Reproductive health services, including family planning and maternal care, face cultural barriers in some communities alongside resource constraints. Adolescent reproductive health remains under-addressed. Skilled birth attendance rates remain below national averages.

Mental health and substance abuse services remain underdeveloped. Limited support exists for addressing psychological trauma related to conflict and drought stress.
